The Belgian Army mostly uses the MECAR 90mm light gun as an anti-tank weapon. However, this gun is also used to fire other types of ammunition, such as smoke and fragmentation rounds.
As an anti-tank gun The MECAR 90mm light gun fires a 7.8 lb (3.54kg), 3.54 inch (90mm) HEAT round. The maximum range is 3,800yards (3,500m), but the effective combat range is closer to 1,090 yards (1,000m). This HEAT round can penetrate up to 13.7 inches (350mm) of armor or 47inches (1,200mm) of concrete.
The MECAR 90mm light gun can fire an 11.5 pound (5.21kg) fragmentation round with a lethal radius of 55 yards (50m) at a range of 4,600 yards (4,200 meters) to break up enemy formations.
There are two versions of this weapon – a 917 pound (416kg) version, the CAN-90H and a 628 pounds (285kg) version, the CAN-90L. Both versions can fire all types of 90mm ammunition.
